1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Philadelphia Mint:
The 1878 Morgan silver dollar is the first year of mintage and every date comes in a number of varieties.
The Morgan silver dollar is still heralded as one of the most beautiful coins ever minted to this day. In 1918 the US Mint decided to melt down a total of 270,232,722 Morgan silver dollars and possibly early issues due to silver shortages. Melting was done in part to start up new production of silver dollars. Due to this large melting of silver dollars many mintage figures are incorrect.
In the 1960s, a massive amount of original mint bags of Morgan dollars were discovered in the US Treasury vaults, including Carson City issues once thought rare. Individuals purchased large quantities of the pieces at their face value and hoarded them for years, eventually the Treasury stopped exchanging silver certificates for the silver coins.
