1622 Atocha Shipwreck 8 Reales Grade 1 Potosi Mint w/ CoA in Bezel
The infamous 1622 Atocha Shipwreck, bearing the rare 8 Reales coin with the P Assayer mark, is a prominent tale in the annals of maritime history. On September 22nd, 1622, an intense storm ravaged King Philip IV’s fleet off the Florida coast, sending them crashing onto a reef. The catastrophe resulted in a significant loss of life and the sinking of an immense treasure trove.
It wasn’t until 1985, almost 400 years later, that Mel Fisher made the historic discovery of the shipwreck. It remains a strong possibility that a wealth of artifacts from the wreck remain undiscovered on the seabed. Coins from this period were handcrafted, cut from imperfect silver bars, and hammered into form, resulting in irregular shapes, sizes, and often incomplete design details.
The Spanish prioritized weight, assayer, and mint marks in coin production. The obverse bears the Spanish crown shield with mint and assayer marks on the left, while the reverse displays the quartered arms of Castille-Leon and the date (if preserved). Fully-dated coins, and those from various mints, are rare finds from the Atocha. Mostly, coins discovered from the shipwreck originate from the new world colonies.
